When two gorgeous furbabies realised they were a long way from home, they saw Vusi and stuck beside him! Unsuccessful in his efforts to find their owner, Vusi endured a long walk in the heat to the SPCA, warding off people who wanted to take the dogs from him, to get them to safety.
Newcastle, South Africa (08 February 2026) – When two furry souls found a companion in an unsuspecting Vusi, they must have sensed they were seeking refuge with the kindest human in the neighbourhood.
While walking down Victoria Street in Newcastle, he was met by two gorgeous dogs who appeared to be a long way from home. Without warning, they decided to make Vusi their friend, trailing behind him and simply refusing to leave him alone.
Realising the little guys were determined to stick by his side, Vusi tried to find out who they belonged to or if anyone in the area knew them. However, he was unsuccessful in this pursuit and decided to do the next best thing – take them to the nearest SPCA, hoping the rightful owners would be able to find the dogs there.
The unforeseen journey saw Vusi travel quite a distance on foot to get to the Newcastle SPCA.
“He obviously did not have any leashes with him, but he made the effort and kept them safe ALL THE WAY TO THE SPCA. He kept them on the grass all the way down Victoria, away from the heavy traffic and people offering to buy the dogs from him or trying to take the dogs from him. He simply said NO they are going to the SPCA,” Newcastle SPCA shares.
Vusi and his tail-wagging friends eventually arrived at the SPCA – hot, sweaty and exhausted.
“He explained that he couldn’t just leave them there [abandoned], as he knew what bad people would do to them or that they could be potentially hurt on the road.”
To see the dogs safe and sound was worth the tiresome journey for Vusi. He didn’t expect anything in return for his good deed; he was simply relieved to see them safe.
The SPCA has praised him a hero, and we couldn’t agree more! Well done, Vusi!
