Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale are welcomed back to the dystopian world of Gilead as the buzzy Hulu series The Testaments rolls out its first season. Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel to her bestselling 1985 book The Handmaid’s Tale,The Testaments is set years after the events of the flagship series and depicts the ongoing patriarchal authoritarianism set upon the Republic of Gilead. The show highlights the strict roles women are to adhere to, where fertility and obedience are key drivers for their success in society. Training as wives until they become of age, the young women attend an elite preparatory school that assists them in learning the duties of what it means to be a married woman in Gilead.
