Manchester City moved top of the Premier League table on Wednesday after a 1-0 win at Turf Moor that sealed Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.
Erling Haaland’s fifth-minute chip over Martin Dubravka proved decisive as Pep Guardiola’s side leapfrogged Arsenal on goal difference with five games remaining.
It is the first time City have led the table since August.
Despite dominating early, City grew frustrated at failing to add to their lead. Dubravka tipped Rayan Cherki’s effort onto the post, Haaland hit the woodwork after the break and Jeremy Doku created constant problems.
Burnley nearly levelled when Zian Flemming missed a clear chance before half-time.
“We created a lot. We did everything after a demanding game three days ago,” Guardiola told reporters post-match after City followed Sunday’s 2-1 win over Arsenal with another important result.
The loss confirmed Burnley’s third relegation in five seasons. Scott Parker’s team have won just 20 points from 34 games and sit 13 points away from safety.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth drew 2-2 with Leeds after Sean Longstaff’s 97th-minute equaliser.
The point lifts Bournemouth above Chelsea into seventh, while Leeds move nine points clear of the drop.
