Actress and Vaseline brand ambassador Linda Mtoba recently got candid about her acting journey during an appearance on the Because We Said So podcast. The star reflected on her early days on the hit telenovela Isibaya and shared how nervous she was when she first stepped into the acting world.
Linda, who played the role of Zama Ngwenya, joined Isibaya in 2016 and quickly became a fan favourite. While many viewers admired her natural talent on screen, the actress revealed that things were not always easy behind the scenes.
Speaking on the podcast, Linda admitted that she struggled to remember her lines when she first started acting.
“I would get the lines wrong. I though surely there was someone holding cards to make you read like a teleprompter. Turns out no. So then I figured with my teaching, it helped because a teacher must prepare and present to students so it kind of helped me with that in turns of getting ready. To help me prepare for my roles and my words as well.”
Linda also shared that nerves played a major role in her forgetting her words, especially in the beginning of her acting career.
“The nerves played a very big part of me not remembering my words. But at the same time people were very gracious and kind with their time.”
Despite her fears and self-doubt, Linda said the support she received from producers and people around her made a huge difference.
The actress also opened up about how she landed the life-changing role on Isibaya. According to Linda, she almost never went to audition, but a close friend encouraged her to take the chance.
“One of my close friends at the time actually encouraged me to go for an audition. It was an open call audition, the ones you get online and you just go and audition.”
Linda explained that she joined the long queue of hopeful actors and patiently waited for her turn. However, the moment she finished her audition, she already had a strong feeling that the role was hers.
“I stood in line and I waited. I get to the front and I do the audition. As soon as I left, I knew I got the role.”
Years later, Linda Mtoba has grown into one of South Africa’s most recognisable stars. Her story continues to inspire many aspiring actors who dream of making it in the entertainment industry.
