Sportsmanship and Young Children

Sam went with his dad and grandma to a local college’s season-ending basketball game. Sam had just started shooting the ball in his child-sized driveway “court” with his dad and was excited to watch “large people” play the game. With minutes to go in a close game, a player missed a free throw and a cheer went up on the far side of the court. Sam, bewildered, turned to his grandma and asked, “Why are people cheering when he missed? Isn’t that the wrong time to cheer?” He was just learning the rules of the game, but he knew something was off. A sportsmanship teachable moment for sure.
