An Instagram Selfie Led Kew Botanists to Victoria colombiana, a New Giant Waterlily with Perhaps 50 Plants Left in the Wild
Nature World News | 14.10.2026 10:43A giant waterlily spotted in the background of an Instagram photo has been described as a new species, and scientists say only about 30 to 50 plants may survive in the wild. The plant, named Victoria colombiana, grows in the Inírida region of eastern Colombia and was identified after a researcher at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, noticed that a lily in a traveler's photo was growing where it should not have been.
