The South Africa Under-20 international becomes the fourth player to swap Kaizer Chiefs for Stellenbosch during the current transfer window ahead of the Betway Premiership season.

The 20-year-old centre-back follows George Matlou, Given Msimango and Ashley Du Preez, who also made the switch to the Cape Winelands club ahead of the new Betway Premiership campaign.

GOPOLANG TAUNYANA READY FOR NEXT STEP

Taunyana progressed through the Kaizer Chiefs development structures and established himself as one of the country’s brightest defensive prospects. He will wear the No. 21 jersey and could make his debut when Stellenbosch FC face Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership on 11 August.

Speaking after completing the move, Taunyana explained why he believes Stellenbosch FC is the right club for his development.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, for the opportunity, because I am very excited to join Stellenbosch FC. “This is a team that is well known for development and having great facilities and coaches, so I’m grateful to be here.

“Growing as a player and a person is the most important thing for me, and I felt that this was the right step for my career and the right environment for me to grow. This is an environment where a lot of players have shone in the past, so I’m excited to go on that journey now as well.”

“For the team, the thing that makes people the happiest is to compete with the best, win trophies and ultimately succeed as a team, so I hope to be able to look back one day and say we achieved that together.”

Taunyana has taken an unusual route to professional football. The Johannesburg-born star qualified as a referee after completing an officiating course at Old Eds in 2021. He won the Referee of the Tournament award at the 2022 Engen Knockout Challenge at just 16 years old.

He later returned to his dream of becoming a player. Taunyana joined the Kaizer Chiefs academy and used his understanding of the game to improve his positioning, communication and tactical awareness.

STELLENBOSCH FC SIGN RISING DEFENDER

The towering defender quickly became a key player for the Kaizer Chiefs reserve side. He impressed in the DStv Diski Challenge and several youth competitions.

In 2024, Taunyana returned to the Engen Knockout Challenge as a player. He helped the Kaizer Chiefs Under-18 team win the tournament and claimed the Defender of the Tournament award. He also played an important role during the club’s 2024/25 DStv Diski Challenge title challenge.

His performances earned him a place in the South Africa Under-20 national team. He helped Amajita win the COSAFA Under-20 Championship before lifting the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Egypt.

Stellenbosch FC will now hope Taunyana continues that rapid rise. The club has built a strong reputation for developing young talent, and the defender now has the chance to establish himself in the Betway Premiership.
