The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially reversed its previous decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years, confirming that the continent’s premier international football tournament will return to its traditional two-year cycle. CAF’s Executive Committee (EXCO) unanimously approved the decision, marking a significant change in the organisation’s plans for the future of African football. The announcement follows a review of the proposed competition structure and concerns about the financial sustainability of replacing AFCON with a new Africa Nations League. CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe explained that the decision prioritises the interests of African football, its 54 member associations and professional African players competing for clubs outside the continent. The revised schedule will see the next TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations take place in 2027, followed by further editions in 2028, 2031 and 2033.
