A myth that we often see when discussions of gender, and especially trans people, come up is the idea of lesbians being somehow anti-trans. This happens to be a rather pervasive idea that some people have, and to be fair, it’s not entirely unwarranted. In Britain, for example, there are a number of fairly high-profile lesbian women who happen to also be transphobic. One example of this is Allison Bailey, one of the leading figures in the LGB Alliance, a rather infamous anti-trans organisation in Britain.
We also see continuous propaganda from the likes of Joanne Rowling, who often frames her transphobia as being centred around the protection of lesbian women. This constant weaponisation of transphobia by people claiming to speak for lesbians is something we see over and over again with transphobes claiming that increased trans rights will lead to an attack on lesbian women.
This narrative is incredibly harmful and it’s also untrue. What’s interesting here is if you actually dig into the stats of who supports trans people the most, it’s by far lesbian women; it’s legitimately not even close.
