Between July 2021 and April 2023, the Antarctic Ice Sheet put on about 695 billion metric tons of mass, the largest such increase in the satellite gravity record. A study published in the journal Nature traces that gain to something thousands of miles away: a stubbornly warm patch of ocean where the western Pacific meets the eastern Indian Ocean, which rearranged atmospheric circulation and funneled moisture toward East Antarctica as extraordinary snowfall.
