The countdown has officially begun for the Basadi in Music Awards (BIMA) 2026, with South Africa’s music industry preparing for one of its biggest celebrations of women in entertainment.

Set to take place on 7 and 8 August 2026 at the Joburg Theatre, the awards will mark their fifth year of recognising the talent, impact, and influence of women who continue to shape the music industry. Over the years, BIMA has become more than just an awards ceremony. It has evolved into a cultural event that celebrates excellence, inspires future generations, and shines a spotlight on women making their mark in music and entertainment.

As anticipation builds ahead of the two-day event, several well-known names have already emerged among this year’s nominees.

One of the nominees for Entertainment Radio Presenter of the Year is Lerato Kganyago for Metro FM’s Midday Link-Up. The category celebrates talented broadcasters who continue to entertain, inform, and keep listeners engaged across South Africa’s radio landscape.

The DJ of the Year category is also packed with familiar faces. Nominees include Uncle Waffles, DBN Gogo, LKG and Kele Megano. These powerhouse women continue to move crowds, set trends, and dominate the music scene. Through their exceptional skill, electrifying performances, and influence on dance culture, these DJs continue to shape the soundtrack of our lives and keep audiences dancing across the continent.

Meanwhile, the race for Amapiano Artist of the Year features some of the genre’s biggest stars, including DBN Gogo, MaWhoo, Thathohatsi, Zee Nxumalo and Nkosazana Daughter. These artists continue to lead one of Africa’s biggest music movements with their chart-dominating sounds, infectious energy, and groundbreaking contributions to the genre. From dancefloor anthems to viral hits, these women are shaping the global Amapiano wave.

The Music Video of the Year category is equally competitive. Among the nominees are Tyla, Karishma, Cici, Naledi Aphiwe and Ayra Starr. These artists have delivered breathtaking visuals that elevated music into unforgettable cinematic experiences through creativity, innovation and powerful storytelling.

While these are just some of the names on this year’s list, there are many more Mzansi stars hoping to take home awards. With August fast approaching, all eyes will be on the Joburg Theatre as the Basadi in Music Awards celebrates five years of honouring women who continue to make an impact in the entertainment industry.
