The South African indoor hockey star reflects on a season of firsts, from adapting to a different style of play in Turkey to helping the team claim the Turkish Super League title.
Durban, South Africa (10 February 2026) – It’s a gold medal for Keegan Hezlett! The South African indoor hockey star has played a vital role in helping Volkan Group Sports Club clinch the Turkish Super League title. This victory also secures the club’s spot at the European Club Indoor Championship 2027.
For Keegan, the win was more than just another medal.
“It was awesome. The style of hockey in Turkey is very different compared to what we’re used to in South Africa. It took a bit of getting used to in the first couple of training sessions.”
It took a bit of getting used to different systems of play, communication barriers with languages, and having to rely on a translator for tactics before the game. Yet, despite the challenges, he says the experience was eye-opening.
“The league is very professional, well-supported, and the investment from different clubs is massive. Lifting the trophy with the team, especially as it was their first time winning, was epic.”
This triumph marks Keegan’s first season with Volkan Group SC after making the leap from South Africa.
“One of the guys over in Turkey got in touch to see if I’d be interested in playing in their Super League, which qualifies for the European Championships.”
Keegan’s journey has been remarkable, both at home and abroad. He made his debut for South Africa in 2019. At the 2023 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup, he helped the team achieve a high finish.
“To go from being a fringe player to a main player, and then get a contract overseas, that’s probably what my dream has always been in hockey. It was just an awesome feeling.”
Beyond playing, Keegan also serves as Director of Hockey at Durban High School, a role he says has enriched both his coaching and playing.
“Coaching teaches me a lot about decision-making and perspective, which I can apply as a player. Playing at a high level helps me understand my students better. The school has been really supportive in letting me pursue my playing career.”
Looking ahead, Keegan is focused on more international and club success. With tours to Malaysia, defending the Nkosi Cup, and aspirations for the 2029 Indoor World Cup, plus the European Club Championships next year, the hockey journey continues.
