‘Kaizer Chiefs players should not be in the World Cup squad’

Last week, Bafana coach Hugo Broos named his preliminary squad to face Panama in two friendlies later this month and no Chiefs players featured in his squad.

Mayoyo argues that Amakhosi players have not been doing well recently, hence they don’t deserve a call-up.

“I believe this selection is a sign that none of the Kaizer Chiefs players are going to the World Cup; they are currently not doing well,” Mayoyo told KickOff.

“No, Kaizer Chiefs players should not be in the World Cup squad. They are not doing well. What is happening at Chiefs is strange; it’s not normal for a whole team to underperform. If a team is not doing well, then it means the players are not doing well.”

Mayoyo feels the 38 players named in Broos preliminary squad should be focused on for the next three months.

“What the Bafana Bafana coach needs to do now, since the World Cup is less than three months away, is to focus on the pool of his 38-man squad,” Mayoyo added.

Amakhosi have struggled for results since the start of February, which saw them crash out of the Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederation Cup.

Their 1-0 win over Durban City ended their four-match losing streak across all competitions.

With 11 matches to go, Kaizer Chiefs can still fight back and finish third, which could perhaps force Broos to select one or two players for the World Cup.
