Pirates 1st, Chiefs 2nd… But Sundowns are coming

The rearranged fixture gives Mamelodi Sundowns a chance to move from seventh place to seven points and join Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the early league standings.

Kabo Yellow currently have four points from their opening two matches. They started with a dramatic 3-2 victory over TS Galaxy before drawing 1-1 against Kaizer Chiefs in a hard-fought encounter.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS CAN CREATE EARLY THREE-WAY TIE

A victory tonight would take Sundowns to seven points, level with Pirates and Chiefs. However, Masandawana will need more than just three points if they want to finish the night at the top of the table.

Pirates currently lead the standings with seven points and a +5 goal difference, while Sundowns have four points and a +1 goal difference.

That means Sundowns need to win by at least four goals to move above the Buccaneers.

A four-goal victory would take Sundowns to a +5 goal difference, level with Pirates. The champions would then move into first place because they would have scored more goals overall.

That makes tonight’s fixture even more intriguing.

Miguel Cardoso and his players know that maximum points would immediately put them back among the early title contenders, while a big victory could send a major warning to their rivals.

MAMELODI GALLANTS FACE HUGE CHALLENGE

Marumo Gallants, meanwhile, have endured a difficult beginning to the 2026/27 campaign. Bahlabane Ba Ntwa have collected just one point from their opening two matches and currently sit 14th in the standings.

They opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Kruger United before suffering a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC. The visitors will need a major improvement in attack and defence if they are to frustrate Sundowns at Loftus.

Masandawana have the depth, quality and home advantage to dominate possession and create chances, while the return of attacker Cassius Mailula could provide another attacking option.

A victory appears to be the expectation for Sundowns, but the size of that victory could determine whether they simply join Pirates and Chiefs on seven points or actually take control of the league summit.

With three giants potentially level on points, Wednesday night could give the Betway Premiership its first major twist of the season.
