Vuyo Biyela and Lasizwe’s ‘Awkward Date’ Sparks Conversation About Acceptance

South African actor Vuyo Biyela and content creator Lasizwe have left viewers talking after their memorable appearance together on the latest episode of Awkward Dates with Lasizwe.
The episode brought together two personalities from different worlds for an unexpectedly open, funny and meaningful conversation. While viewers enjoyed the chemistry, jokes and moments that had many people blushing, the episode also created space for a much deeper conversation about sexuality, acceptance and simply being comfortable around one another.
Biyela, who is known for his iconic role as Freedom on The Polygamist, later took to Instagram to thank Lasizwe for the opportunity and for creating an environment where they could have such an honest conversation.

I think sometimes we forget that we’re all human before we are anything else. Your sexuality, my sexuality, our differences, none of that should ever be a reason to treat someone with less love, dignity or respect.
We don’t have to understand everything about each other to respect each other. We don’t have to be the same to share a space, laugh together, learn from one another and genuinely connect. If there’s one thing I hope people take from our episode, it’s that discrimination has no place between us. Let’s stop putting people in boxes and start seeing the person first.

The message resonated with the spirit of the episode, which managed to combine humour with a conversation that went beyond the usual expectations of a dating show.
The episode also proved to be a major success for Lasizwe. It reportedly received 130 000 views within its first 24 hours, breaking a record for the show. Normally, it takes around four days for an episode to reach 100 000 views, making the response to Biyela’s appearance particularly significant.
Following the entertaining episode, Lasizwe also took to X to reflect on an important part of the conversation: men being comfortable enough in their own sexuality to interact naturally with gay men without feeling threatened or pressured to prove anything.
Lasizwe wrote, “Shoutout to heterosexual men who are genuinely comfortable in their sexuality.
Men who can exist around gay men without treating homosexuality like it’s contagious, or thinking that being seen with us somehow puts their own sexuality up for debate.
And I think that’s part of what I want Awkward Dates to normalise: heterosexual men and homosexual men existing in the same space without either person having to perform a role.
The gay guy doesn’t have to become the “gay bestie,” the handbag or the entertainment. And the straight guy doesn’t have to become defensive, hyper-masculine or immediately assume, “he wants me.”
Sometimes two men with different sexualities can literally just… vibe. Laugh. Talk shit. Respect each other. Exist.
Because being comfortable around a gay man doesn’t make a straight man less straight. And being gay doesn’t mean we want every straight man we meet.”
Beyond the laughter and viral moments, Biyela and Lasizwe’s episode appears to have achieved something more meaningful: showing that two people can put differences aside, have fun, connect and still walk away with a greater understanding of each other.
And judging by the numbers, viewers were clearly enjoying the conversation too.
