‘Play for my team’ – How Nelson Mandela persuaded Bucs legend to join Orlando Pirates

The retired Nigerian goalkeeper arrived at Pirates in 1990 and went on to enjoy a remarkable 15-year spell at the club, establishing himself as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the club’s history.
Before signing for Pirates, Okpara spent time training with both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns as he searched for a club in South Africa.
Speaking to Lebohang Mokoena on SoccerBeat, Okpara recalled a memorable encounter with Mandela at the Mariston Hotel in Johannesburg, where the ANC regularly held meetings during that period.
“That was when I saw Tata Mandela for the first time face to face because the ANC used to use that place for their meetings. So I was fortunate enough,” said Okpara.
The former goalkeeper said Mandela’s warm welcome immediately made him feel at home.
“When I heard Tata Mandela was coming, I said I need to see him. He was a very gentle and adorable person. He called me and said, ‘Come, you are the son of the soil.’ That statement boosted my confidence.
“He then said, ‘Okay, you have to play for my team. Do you know my team?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t know.’
“He said, ‘One day when you start playing, I’ll remind you.’ I asked my friend, ‘Which team does Nelson Mandela support?’ and he said, ‘Pirates.’”
That conversation proved decisive, with Okpara ultimately choosing Orlando Pirates, where he became a club icon and enjoyed one of the most successful careers by a foreign player in South African football.
