South African actress Ama Qamata celebrated a major milestone for her latest film, Fight Like A Girl, when the movie was screened in South Africa for the first time.

The special screening took place on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, at Ster-Kinekor in Sandton. The event began at 19:30 and brought together supporters, industry figures and local stars who came out to celebrate Qamata and her latest project.

The screening also featured a powerful panel discussion about the film, hosted by Women for Change. The event quickly generated excitement, with tickets for the screening selling out within a week after Qamata announced the premiere.

Fight Like A Girl follows the story of a young Congolese woman who is forced to work in an illegal mineral mine before escaping her captors. After finding her freedom, she begins rebuilding her life when she joins a renowned all-women boxing club in the border city of Goma.

Qamata plays Safi, the young woman at the centre of the story. The 2024 boxing drama is based on true events and follows Safi’s journey from forced labour to finding safety, strength and purpose through boxing.

The film explores courage, survival and the power of women who refuse to give up, making the South African screening an important moment for Qamata.

Qamata gave her followers a glimpse into the special evening through her Instagram stories. She shared moments from the red carpet, the panel discussion and the audience who came out to support the film.

Reflecting on the overwhelming response, Qamata shared her gratitude and said, “I’m so humbled. I’m humbled by the women who showed up for this film. I’m humbled by the reception of the film. I believe in the film but to see people actually showed for the film and showed the same passion and love it as much as I do means the world to me. I think it’s very important to keep championing for African women.”

The screening also attracted a star-studded crowd, including reigning Miss South Africa Qhawekazi Mazaleni and her sister, Homba Mazaleni.

SAMA co-host Zanele Potelwa was also among those who attended the event and congratulated Qamata on her performance.

Sharing a photo with Qamata from the red carpet, Potelwa wrote on her Instagram story, “I’m so INCREDIBLY proud of you my powerhouse Queen!!! AMA!!!! I’m in awe of your movie . What do you mean?
