Leaner joined Babina Noko ahead of the 2023/24 season and established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper during his time at the Limpopo outfit.

His impressive performances were rewarded with a maiden Bafana Bafana call-up, earning his senior international debut in South Africa’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Panama earlier this year.

Announcing his departure, Sekhukhune thanked the 28-year-old for his service to the club.

Sekhukhune also confirmed the appointment of former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze as their new head coach.

“Coach Kaze brings a wealth of experience. He worked within the Burundi national team structures, at the renowned FC Barcelona Academy in Canada. He was also part of the successful Young Africans SC technical team in Tanzania,” the club stated.

Leaner is now a free agent, with his next destination yet to be confirmed. Given his experience and international pedigree, the goalkeeper is expected to attract interest from several Betway Premiership clubs.

Although he missed on the Bafana World Cup squad, the 28-year-old goalkeeper will not be out of options in the coming weeks.

Orlando Pirates could emerge as a potential option if they decide to strengthen their goalkeeping department.

While Sipho Chaine remains the club’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, Melusi Buthelezi currently serves as his deputy.

Some Pirates supporters believe the club should bring in another experienced goalkeeper to provide stronger competition for the number-one jersey, making Leaner a player worth monitoring during the transfer window. Chaine is a Bafana goalkeeper but with competition in the side, he might actually improve and take over as number-one keeper.
