There is just no beating the rich flavour of Mzansi cuisine, and after trying it out for himself, Canadian social media personality Bilal Dawson couldn’t help but agree!
United Arab Emirates (11 February 2026) – South African food is top tier, and whoever cares to argue with us is simply up for a losing game.
Popular Canadian social media personality Bilal Dawson is known for his comedic sketch videos on his Instagram and TikTok accounts, and as of late, his food-tasting content, where he tries out various dishes from all over the world.
One of his followers recently questioned why he’s been tasting everything other than South African cuisine, and he was more than happy to give it a try.
Though he wasn’t quite sure where to source Mzansi meals in his current country, he eventually found a meat market store that stocked some of our faves.
Wearing a T-shirt with a bold print of the South African flag, he fully owned the experience as he shopped around for some items before heading back to his car for the ultimate taste test.
In a video, he is seen first trying out some good ol’ biltong, which instantly received his stamp of approval.
Bilal also tried a Stoney ginger beer, followed by a braai (which he kinda pronounced as a “brow”) with an assortment of meats he quite enjoyed too. His appreciation for the wors was, uhm, interesting.
Other foods on the menu included a fords burger slider, chakalaka, pap and other snacks like Cheese Curls, Jelly Tots and Steri Stumpi.
His overall rating of the food? “Everything was fire!”
“I think for snacks, they might have been lacking a little bit but as far as meat, some of the best I’ve ever had. From my experience, I’m going to give South African food a 9/10,” he said.
His online audience quite enjoyed his video, with over 2,000 funny comments – several of which were from South Africans who showed Bilal love or schooled him on how to best enjoy his selected food options.
“Next time, take a big plate, put Pap + Meat + Chakalaka together, eat with your Hand, now that’s the South African way,” a user advised.
While another person hilariously teased:
“Joh, I never seen someone chow chakalaka just like that”.
And that’s on winning over another Mzansi food fan!
