The World Is Closer to Protecting 30 Percent of Its Land Than Official Figures Show, With One Catch

Earth may already have about 26.8% of its land in some form of conservation area, far more than the 18.5% recorded in official global statistics. That estimate, from a study published Oct. 14 in Nature, would leave the world roughly 3.2 percentage points short of the international goal to conserve 30% of land by 2030.
