Deadline set for the end of green ID books in South Africa: 14 million people affected

14.7 million South Africans and permanent residents who still use green ID books have until 31 March 2028 to obtain smart IDs, Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber has announced, adding that the books will cease being valid on this date.
