Female mice that spent six weeks aboard the International Space Station came home able to reproduce, but their offspring and grand-offspring showed measurable reproductive changes, according to a study that is drawing new attention as NASA plans longer missions to the Moon and eventually Mars. The research, led by Lane Christenson of the University of Kansas Medical Center with collaborators including scientists at NASA's Ames Research Center, was published June 30, 2026, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
