Volkswagen Recalls 25,729 Polo Vivo Vehicles Over Handbrake Defect. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a nationwide recall of 25,729 Volkswagen Polo Vivo vehicles following the identification of a safety defect by Volkswagen Group Africa.

The affected vehicles were sold nationally between February 2025 and February 2026. According to the NCC, the issue relates to the height of a rivet on the handbrake lever, which in some cases may fall outside the required specification. This defect could result in the handbrake failing to engage properly or, in rare instances, disengaging unexpectedly.

The potential risk is particularly concerning when vehicles are parked on inclines, prompting Volkswagen to advise owners to take precautionary measures until inspections and repairs are completed. For manual models, drivers are urged to park in first gear, while automatic models should be left in “P” as outlined in the owner’s manual. Owners are further advised to avoid parking on slopes until their vehicles have been checked.

The NCC confirmed it is closely monitoring the recall to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Act and safeguard consumer rights. Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu stressed the urgency of the matter, urging affected owners to act immediately.

“Given the high potential risks of the defect, owners of affected vehicles are urged to immediately get their vehicles to any authorised VW dealership for inspection. Any inspection and associated repairs will be done at no cost to the vehicle owners,” Ratshisusu said.

Volkswagen has assured customers that all necessary repairs will be carried out free of charge and that clear communication will be provided throughout the recall process.

The recall marks a significant step in addressing safety concerns and reinforces the importance of proactive consumer protection measures in South Africa’s automotive sector.
