The outer solar system may fall apart roughly 100 times sooner than a previous estimate suggested once the Sun dies, according to new computer simulations by astronomers at Caltech and the University of Michigan. The researchers found that the way the dying Sun sheds its mass could knock Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune into chaotic orbits within about a billion years of the Sun becoming a white dwarf.
