South Africa’s canning fruit industry is facing a period of significant uncertainty following the announcement that Premier Foods intends to close its canning factory in Tulbagh. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, Minister of Agriculture Willie Aucamp met yesterday with representatives of the canning fruit industry in Robertson to discuss the challenges facing producers, processors and workers. The meeting provided an opportunity for government and industry stakeholders to assess the potential impact of the proposed factory closure and explore possible solutions. As one of the country’s important agricultural value chains, the canning fruit industry supports thousands of jobs and contributes significantly to rural economies, particularly in the Western Cape. The discussions highlighted the need for urgent collaboration to protect livelihoods, maintain production capacity and secure the long term future of the sector.
