Caster Semenya reflects on six months with her JAECOO J7 SHS

South African sporting legend Caster Semenya says her JAECOO J7 SHS has become much more than just a car—it’s now an essential part of her family’s everyday life. The Olympic champion has spent the past year driving the plug-in hybrid SUV, and she says she has “zero regrets” about getting behind the wheel of what she affectionately calls “Black Mamba.”
Named after its sleek black finish and smooth driving experience, the SUV also reflects Semenya’s long-standing love for snakes and her famous sporting nickname, Cobra.
“This car was chosen for me and I have zero regrets. I love the vehicle because it is a classy ride, it drives so smoothly, is spacious and the perfect ride for me and my family. It is also very stylish,” she said.
For the mother of two, some of the best memories in the JAECOO J7 SHS happen during road trips back to her hometown in Limpopo.
“I love driving home to Limpopo,” Semenya shared. “A typical drive home is filled with voices of my children talking up a storm, laughter and sing-alongs. Those moments are truly my favourite. We try to take trips home often.”
Whether it’s the school run, training sessions or family getaways, Semenya says the SUV easily adapts to her busy lifestyle. The spacious cabin and generous 500-litre boot regularly carry everything from children’s toys to gym bags, running spikes and training gear.
Inside the cabin, she says comfort is one of the vehicle’s biggest highlights. Premium leather seats, a panoramic sunroof and a large 14.8-inch touchscreen have made every journey more enjoyable, while the intuitive infotainment system keeps navigation, music and climate controls within easy reach.
The JAECOO J7 SHS also delivers impressive efficiency. The plug-in hybrid SUV offers a claimed electric-only driving range of up to 90 km, while its combined range stretches to as much as 1,200 km. With claimed fuel consumption of just 4.7 L/100 km, it balances everyday practicality with long-distance capability.
Performance is equally impressive, producing a combined 255 kW of power and 525 Nm of torque, giving drivers plenty of confidence whether navigating city streets or heading out on longer road trips.
After a year of ownership, Semenya says she still hasn’t found anything to complain about.
