Durban has an identity crisis. It is simultaneously a sleepy seaside enclave and also Africa’s busiest port. It is responsible for moving tonnes of goods into and out of the country on a daily basis, and by Transnet’s account, is “a premium gateway into Africa and the rest of the world”.
