“I think what was important for me in approaching Matipa was understanding that she never sees herself as ‘the other woman’ or a villain in somebody else’s story. She sees herself as a woman who has worked incredibly hard to become who she is – educated, accomplished, emotionally intelligent, and very clear about the kind of life and partnership she wants.
“So when workshopping her, I tried to move away from playing intention as manipulation or seduction. I was more interested in her conviction. Matipa doesn’t wait around hoping a man will someday become worthy of her. She meets people where they are.”
Kwanele’s comments offer a deeper understanding of Matipa and the choices she makes throughout the series. Rather than portraying the character as a villain, the actress focused on showing her confidence, intelligence and determination.
