• More than 500 police officers from all nine provinces are taking part in this year’s Comrades Marathon.
• Mkhwanazi says the officers are carrying the image of the South African Police Service at a time when the organisation faces corruption and political interference allegations.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says there is still hope for the South African Police Service despite ongoing allegations of corruption, abuse of power and political interference.
Mkhwanazi was speaking to 515 police officers from across the country who will represent the South African Police Service in Sunday’s Comrades Marathon.
He said the officers have an important role to play in rebuilding public trust in the police service.
The Commissioner said their participation in one of the world’s biggest ultramarathons sends a positive message to communities.
His comments come as the South African Police Service faces investigations linked to corruption and political interference.
The investigations followed Mkhwanazi’s explosive media briefing last year, which resulted in several senior officials being suspended.
Mkhwanazi told the runners they are ambassadors for the police service and must conduct themselves with pride.
“Because you are out there to market the South African Police Service, do it because you love it and it is in your heart. Behave wisely and make sure that you represent the organisation very well,” he said.
He reminded the officers that members of the public may still approach them for help while they are running.
Mkhwanazi said this shows that many South Africans still have faith in police officers on the ground.
He said he plans to meet the runners again on Monday to discuss what he described as the future of the South African Police Service.
