(The Post News) The big stage of football set for FIFA 2026 World Cup will miss 20 football stars. Every edition leaves high-profile absentees. This is due to failed qualification campaign, injuries, and fierce competition within national teams.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across the United States of America (USA, Canada, and Mexico). It will introduce a historic 48-team format, for the first-time since the introduction of the edition. The final qualification matches end-March, completed the line-up for what is called ‘the biggest edition.’
This 2026 edition has several big names that will not be featured in the expanded World Cup field. Injuries, non-qualification, and under performance are key absence for the notable names to be left out.
Who will miss the word cup and why?
One of the Europe’s attacking names, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia fell short as Georgia could not qualify. Geeorgia was in a tough group featuring Spain and Turkey for the 2026 World Cup qualification group stages.
Victor Osimhen of Nigeria is one of the biggest names absent from the tournament. Nigeria has once again missed to qualify for the World Cup, suffering a defeat from Congo. Ademola Lookman was also denied by Nigeria’s failure, missing out the extended edition.
Serbian, Dusan Vlahovic will also miss the World Cup due to Serbia failing to make it to the grand stage. Jan Oblak of Slovenia misses out after finishing behind Switzerland and Kosovo in the group stages.
Dominik Szoboszlai of Hungary will also not feature in the World Cup stage for the first-time. This follows Hungary’s failure from the competitive group.
Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, will miss the anticipated 2026 edition as Italy misses third consecutive World Cup. Sandro Tonali misses World Cup chance due to Italy’s ongoing decline.
Robert lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski from Poland will both miss 2026 World Cup. This year’s edition was Lewandowski’s final World Cup appearance. Poland faced a narrow elimination, however it showed strong campaign.
Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen both shares same fate of World Cup absence. The fate follows Denmark falling in the play-off final, leaving the stars without World Cup opportunity.
Ukraine’s elimination in the play-offs left Oleksandr Zinchenko out of the grand stage. Zincheko was also sidelined by an injury during playoffs. Leon Bailey will also miss the historic edition due to Jamaica failing to qualify.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon misses another chance for the World Cup as Gabon failed in the playoffs. Alexis Sanches of Chiles dropped for this year’s edition, as Chile fell short and ended bottom.
Slovakia’s Milan Skriniar, misses the World Cup after Slovakia failing to defeat Kosovo in the playoffs semi-finals. Greece also finished behind, failing Vangekis Pavlidis to feature in the 2026 World Cup edition.
Bryan Mbeumo will not appear in the World Cup stage as Cameroon failed to qualify. Kosovo also failed in the pal-off final, making it impossible for Vedat Muriqi to appear in the 2026 World Cup.
