Sdumo Mtshali celebrates GQ South Africa Cover

South African actor Sdumo Mtshali is celebrating another exciting milestone in his acting career after gracing the cover of GQ South Africa’s August print issue.
The actor proudly marked the special achievement in Johannesburg, where he gathered with his family, close friends and colleagues at The Bioscope Independent Cinema to celebrate the release of the magazine.
For Mtshali, the cover comes as another meaningful moment in a career that has seen him take on some of the country’s most memorable acting roles. The actor took to social media to share his excitement and gratitude for the people who have supported him throughout his journey.

Mtshali’s career began gaining widespread attention after he won the inaugural season of Class Act in 2010. However, his ambitions extended beyond simply becoming a household name. “I didn’t go there to win,” he says.
Reflecting on what he hoped to achieve at the time, Mtshali explains, “My goal was to take the South African audience back to the theatre.”
His Class Act victory soon opened up new opportunities, and that same year, he secured his first leading television role in Intersexions. From there, Mtshali continued to build an impressive career, becoming recognised as one of South Africa’s talented and respected screen actors.
More recently, his performance as Jonasi Gomora in Netflix’s The Polygamist introduced his work to an even wider international audience. The role became another defining moment for the actor, allowing viewers from around the world to experience his talent.
“It feels brand new again,” he says. “It feels affirming to know that I’m doing something special. I’ve always dreamed of this journey, and God is placing me exactly where I need to be.”
The Polygamist has become one of Netflix’s biggest African success stories, with Mtshali’s character, Jonasi Gomora, at the heart of the drama. The character is a complicated husband who has sparked strong reactions from viewers, with audiences finding themselves either disliking him, sympathising with him or even supporting him despite his flaws.
For Mtshali, playing such a complex character means putting his personal feelings aside and focusing on understanding the person he is portraying.
“I can’t judge a character,” Mtshali says. “As an actor, you understand the morality of everything, but you have to put your own opinions aside. You have to tell the story truthfully.”
