How Does Mindfulness Change the Brain in Drug Addiction?

Why does a reminder of drug use command attention while food, relationships, and other everyday rewards lose their pull in drug addiction? Our impaired response inhibition and salience attribution (iRISA) model of addiction describes this imbalance as a seesaw: drug-related cues gain value and salience, capturing attention and feeling important, at the expense of everyday activities and relationships. This imbalance then makes regulation of craving and drug use behavior harder.
