Through surf therapy and volunteer support, the Roxy Davis Foundation continues to create spaces where the ocean becomes a place of freedom.
Cape Town, South Africa (27 February 2026) – The sound of waves, warm sunshine and calm surf created the perfect setting for something far more powerful than a day at the beach. The Roxy Davis Foundation recently brought together surfers, swimmers, volunteers and families to celebrate inclusion, healing and the transformative power of the ocean.
Marking International Wheelchair Day on 7 March while also aligning with the spirit of International Day of Persons with Disabilities and International Volunteers Day, the Foundation hosted a special Surf Therapy & Beach Day designed to spotlight accessibility in sport and community.
The focus was to make ocean-based therapy accessible to all South Africans, particularly persons with disabilities. Through structured surf therapy sessions, beach activities and volunteer engagement, the initiative continues to create safe, empowering spaces where the ocean becomes a place of freedom rather than limitation.
“We are so excited to be celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities combined with International Volunteers Day. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate,” said Roxy Davis. “We essentially want to make ocean-based therapy accessible for any South African with the healing of the ocean.”
For participants, the impact goes far beyond recreation.
“When I’m in the ocean, I feel like I’m not missing a body part. It’s like I’m fully me. I’m home. I can do me without holding.”
That sense of belonging and wholeness is exactly what the foundation aims to nurture.
Volunteers remain central to making the day possible, ensuring safe ratios in the water and meaningful engagement on the sand. One volunteer described the experience as eye-opening, noting that watching athletes surf at an elite level completely shifts perceptions of disability and ability.
On days like these, the ocean becomes a space of empowerment and joy for the surfers. And creating environments where everyone feels fully themselves.
