An improbable inventory of pom-poms, hand-blown glass, tapestries, and chandelier-like domes fills the immersive sculptures Bobby Anspach began building as a graduate student at the Rhode Island School of Design. Gathered under the title Place for Continuous Eye Contact, the enclosed environments are each designed for a three-minute visit, during which a participant wears a patch over one eye and studies the reflection of the other in a small mirror or, in the version made for two, holds the gaze of a second person seated opposite. Inside, light, color, and ambient compositions by Eluvium, the artist’s longtime collaborator, are calibrated to produce subtle shifts in depth perception.
