Tembisa Residents Rally Against Closure of Slotjhile Pub. More than 2,000 residents have signed an online petition opposing the closure of Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama, a popular community venue in Tembisa, where over 150 young employees face losing their jobs.
The establishment’s General Manager, Cornelius Raseobi, confirmed last week that the business would shut down on Tuesday following a High Court order citing non-compliance with Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality zoning regulations.
“Some of our structures are situated on municipal land, and we have been attempting to secure rezoning approval for the past nine years. Unfortunately, our applications have not been successful,” Raseobi explained.
As of noon on Tuesday, 2,078 signatures had been collected on the petition, urging the municipality to reconsider the closure. Supporters argue that Slotjhile is more than a nightlife venue, describing it as a cultural hub and community anchor in Tembisa and the broader Ekurhuleni region.
The venue has hosted major events such as the Tembisa Jazz Festival, featuring internationally acclaimed group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and has supported local initiatives including the Run Tembisa marathon and weekly soup kitchen programmes assisting vulnerable residents.
“It’s a beacon of hope and unity for us in Tembisa and the entire Ekurhuleni region,” reads the petition. “Founded by visionary young brothers, this establishment has turned our community into a home of good music, vibrancy and community spirit.”
While acknowledging the legal ruling, supporters are calling on the municipality to explore alternatives such as formalising land use, relocating the business, or granting a special permit that balances regulations with community benefit.
Concerns remain over the potential economic impact, with residents warning that closure would dismantle a cornerstone of community life and remove a vital support system for families dependent on the establishment.
