South Africa’s Litchi Industry Competes Globally Through Precision Farming and Export Focus

Litchis are a tropical fruit that originated in China and have been farmed there for centuries. China remains the world’s largest producer, with output of about 200,000 tonnes recorded in 2018. South Africa produces far smaller volumes, around 8,000 tonnes in a good year, yet it can still rank among the top ten global producers. This position is supported by strong export demand, efficient production systems, and a counter-seasonal advantage during the Northern Hemisphere winter.
