SA’s vulture conservation heroes release Cape Vulture called Squiffy, who beat the odds and spread her wings!
South Africa (13 February 2026) – Squiffy the Cape Vulture was found by a farmer, grounded and battling to take off. That farmer did the right thing and called in experts.
“This rescue was made possible thanks to the quick thinking of farmer Pieter Vorster, who found her and immediately contacted Vulpro to help secure and stabilise her. That first call and his initial intervention were the lifeline Squiffy needed.” shares vulture conservation organisation, VulPro.
It was confirmed that the vulnerable Cape Vulture had collapsed and was unable to fly. She also sported a skew beak, which earned her name amongst rescuers – ‘Squiffy.’
“Despite a collapse and a skewed beak, her road to recovery at Vulpro has been a testament to her resilience,” shares Vulpro.
Throughout her recovery, Squiffy was in the best hands.
VulPro is led by conservationist Kerri Wolter. The world-class organisation is focused on halting the decline of African vulture populations. The organisation does this by breeding to supplement wild populations, and by rescuing and rehabilitating poisoned and injured vultures and releasing them back into the wild.
The organisation also focuses on education, community engagement, and extensive research that helps further the understanding around vulture species in South Africa and how best we can protect them.
Squiffy has now joined over 450 rehabilitated vultures who have turned the odds after rehabilitation with VulPro.
“Today, she has been deemed fit to return to the wild. Before her release, she was fitted with a tracking device to monitor her journey and gather vital data to help protect her species.” VulPro shared.
“Giving Squiffy a second chance isn’t just about saving one life, it’s about preserving a species that keeps our ecosystems healthy and our skies alive,” it added.
