Scientists have shown that helicopters can locate hidden radioactive sources to within 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) and estimate their strength within 2 percentage points, using analysis that runs in microseconds instead of hours or days. The method was tested by military helicopters flying about 30 meters (roughly 100 feet) above known sources in Switzerland, including areas near the Mühleberg and Gösgen nuclear plants, according to the American Nuclear Society.
