Today is the 18th National Girl Child Day in India, which was established in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to highlight the promise and hardship of the country’s daughters. Over nearly two decades, India’s girls have enrolled in more schools, survived childbirth at a higher rate than ever before, and achieved objectives that previous generations could not conceive.
However, when we commemorate this year’s theme-
“Digital Inclusion & Lifecycle Support”
Under the rallying cry Beti Padhao, Digital Banao, it is apparent that the fight for equality has matured. Today’s challenge is more than just access to education and health; it’s about empowering girls at every stage of their lives, from the womb to the workplace.

The shift in focus for 2026 reflects a more comprehensive understanding of gender inequality as a continuous, multifaceted process rather than a series of discrete issues.
