Netflix’s latest drama series, The Polygamist, has quickly become one of South Africa’s biggest talking points. Since premiering on 12 June, the show has dominated social media timelines and sparked conversations among viewers who are invested in its complex family dynamics.

One of the characters attracting significant attention is Sarah, portrayed by Nolwazi Tsebesha. While many viewers have formed strong opinions about the character, the actress believes there is more to Sarah than what audiences see on the surface.

Speaking to TV Mzansi, Nolwazi explained that Sarah’s actions are deeply rooted in her desire for acceptance and validation. According to the actress, Sarah longs to be part of the family and wants to feel like she belongs. However, she often feels excluded and believes she is not given the space to find her place within the family structure.

As The Polygamist continues to gain popularity, Nolwazi admitted that she has been surprised by the public’s reaction to her character. She noted that many viewers see Sarah as irritating and annoying, rather than recognising her as one of the victims in the story.

“What surprised me the most is how people are receiving Sarah, majority of the people find her irritating and annoying, they are not seeing her as one of the victims. Yes she has her own issues that she’s dealing with but she doesn’t see how her dad treats his other kids, all she sees is them getting the life she always wanted and starts hating them just because they are blessed in ways that she isn’t.”

For Nolwazi, the response highlights how differently audiences interpret characters and their motivations. While Sarah’s behaviour may frustrate viewers, the actress believes the character is driven by hurt, jealousy and a longing for the life she never had.

Reflecting on her own journey in the entertainment industry, Nolwazi shared a simple message she would give to her younger self.

“Believe in yourself because if you don’t believe in yourself no one will.”

The actress also revealed that one of the most rewarding parts of being involved in the series has been seeing the love from viewers and the conversations the show has generated.

“Just the love, the conversations and how people relate and view The Polygamist.”

Another highlight for Nolwazi was the opportunity to work with actress Gugu Gumede again. She described her co-star as both a talented performer and an incredible person.

“Sisi Gugu is a brilliant actress more so an amazing human being and I could work with her over and over again, the woman she is, wow. I feel absolutely blessed.”

As The Polygamist continues to captivate audiences across the country, Nolwazi’s portrayal of Sarah remains one of the show’s most discussed performances, keeping viewers talking with every new episode.
