A thin, smooth cap of cloud briefly veiled a towering fire cloud above Montana's Sand Creek fire on August 11, and NASA scientists flying overhead captured it in rare detail. The feature, called a pileus cloud, appeared in images from an instrument aboard a high-altitude NASA research aircraft, the agency's Earth Observatory reported on September 29.
