Few terms in mental health get tossed around as carelessly — or as harmfully — as “personality disorder.” We hear them weaponized in breakup stories, in pop-psychology takes online, and in the way people casually label an ex “a narcissist” or a difficult relative “borderline.” Somewhere along the way, these clinical terms became insults. And that’s a real problem, because behind every one of these diagnoses is a human being trying to make sense of patterns that often started as a way to survive.
