How does diplomacy shape everyday lives?
When we think of diplomacy we tend to imagine a political figure. Authoritarian people that convey the rights of people, the armed conflicts and peace solutions that come within. More often than not, the perception of diplomacy is rather sterile.
Official, traditional, strict. And before we move on with the thought of how it impacts our everyday lives its rather important to highlight that the previous description isn’t far from the truth. Traditional diplomacy deals with formal relations between states, handled by accredited professionals. But the interesting part begins when you look at how its principles quietly spill into daily life. So how does it make its way straight into your workplace or family affairs?
Contrary to the assumption its more simple than ever.
A board meeting at work where many people who disagree and none desire to carry the burden of accountability? That’s our playground. Failed diplomacy. Put quite simply failed diplomacy equals failed communication. If you’re the mouthy one in the group standing up for people and bringing up the issues that impact most but move none to action you could consider yourself a modern diplomat.
So how does it exactly shape our lives? The answer is more multilateral than imaginable but to give a few examples: provides smooth, insightful and productive communication which effectively assists all problem solving based matters. Prevention, identification and solution.
So the next time you feel too timid to speak up; at home, work or in relationships remember- diplomacy isn’t just for embassies. Because communication is way more than a conversation. And the ultimate balance striking approach is a diplomatic.
Communicate, represent, negotiate. And heads up, your voice shapes more outcomes than you think xx
