I am a transgender woman, and the caricature the right has built of me is a six-foot-four man with a beard, a barrel chest, and a plan for the women’s locker room. I have watched that portrait get painted on cable news, in campaign ads, and in the heading of a presidential executive order. Then I look at the actual transgender women and girls the movement names by name, and the portrait falls apart in my hands.
