When Whitey arrived at the Animal Welfare Society, he was a silent, unresponsive shadow of himself, but his owner’s desperate race on foot to save him was met by a team that simply refused to let his story end in tragedy.
Cape Town, South Africa (13 February 2026) – One moment, Whitey was playing happily in his yard like any beloved dog; the next, he suddenly collapsed, turning a normal afternoon into every pet owner’s worst nightmare.
Frothing at the mouth and suffering seizures, Mrs Mchiteka from Gugulethu was sent into immediate panic. She rushed to the Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWS) for help. With no transport, she did the next best thing she could think of on the spot – run!
“She has been coming to our clinic since she was a teenager, growing up with a deep love for animals and in that moment, she trusted us with her beloved family member,” AWS said.
Whitey was rushed into the hospital, where the medical team immediately worked to stabilise and treat his severe case of poisoning.
“He was unresponsive, and his condition was critical, but we refused to give up on him. After two long days, Whitey started to brighten up and return to his playful self.”
On the third day, Whitey was strong enough to go home with medication and ongoing care.
Though it was touch-and-go at first, the AWS team was overjoyed to see the brave boy reunited with the owner who ran the distance for him.
“Their bond is unbreakable, and it reminds us why we do what we do every single day. This family knows that when animals are in need, we are here. Always.”
The story has touched many hearts online, with many people commending the compassionate Mrs Mchiteka for getting her furbaby the help he deserved and praising AWS for working around the clock to nurse him back to health.
An amazing owner and an incredible team – we applaud them all for giving Whitey a fighting chance!
