Lionel Messi became the Fifa World Cup’s all-time top scorer and Egypt secured their first-ever victory as Monday’s action delivered milestones in Texas and Vancouver.
In Dallas, Messi struck twice to give Argentina a 2-0 win over Austria and a place in the last 32.
After missing a ninth-minute penalty, the 38-year-old made history in the 38th minute, sweeping home Facundo Medina’s pass for his 17th World Cup goal to pass Miroslav Klose.
He sealed it deep in stoppage time, weaving past four defenders before finding the back of the net.
“There is not much to say about Leo. He is the best in history,” teammate Julian Alvarez told reporters post-match.
Austria, who only managed one shot on target, stay in second on three points ahead of Jordan versus Algeria on Tuesday morning.
Earlier on in the day over in Vancouver, Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 for their first ever World Cup win.
Finn Surman headed the Kiwis ahead, but Mostafa Zico equalised before Mohamed Salah curled in a 67th-minute lead then set-up Trezeguet to head in the third.
“It feels like we are playing in Egypt. It’s a great win and great vibe,” Salah said post-match.
The result puts Egypt top of Group G on four points, needing a draw against Iran on Friday to confirm their spot in the knockouts.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal will be hoping to get their first win of the tournament before England take on Ghana in Tuesday’s prime time kick-offs. All the action will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
