My Dad likes to brag about how he’s not homophobic. He has told me, “I have a secretary who is a man. He’s also gay and I don’t mind it.”

I’ve been around Republicans like my Dad too long to believe what he’s saying. He’s trying to pat himself on the back for not being bigoted, while still being bigoted.

“So then you support same sex marriage rights?”

My Dad pauses when I ask that. “That’s not what I said. I said that I was not homophobic.”

“Thinking that people who aren’t straight should have no right to get married is homophobic,” I said.

He disagrees because marriage is a religious institution, supposedly and therefore should follow the church’s rules. But if that’s the case, then why does it have so many legal protections by the government that recognizes it? Wouldn’t it only be recognized by the church if it were actually a religious ritual?

It’s because marriage is actually a secular institution that shouldn’t have to follow bigoted Christian rules. But they believe only straight marriages are anointed by their god.

People like him don’t actually care whether or not they’re hurting gay people. They’re more worried about whether they are perceived as being…
