Retired Couple’s Street Library Stopping People in Their Tracks!

Tiny museums and libraries are popping up across the West Coast, and we’re here for it!

Western Cape, South Africa (09 February 2026) – First it was The Little Wolf museum, now it’s the little Street Library.

A stroll along the upgraded Strand prom recently led to a small but heart-warming discovery for one couple, Tracy and Brian. They stumbled on an old red post box lovingly and transformed and maintained as a free street library for anyone passing by.

“We just had to share this with you. In December, my husband and I walked the upgraded Strand Promenade (rather lovely). On one of the days, we walked on the opposite side of the promenade, and we came across what was originally a Red Post Box but had been given a new lease on life and had been turned into a Street Library.”

Even better, the couple who created it happened to be there at the time, gently tending to their creation.

“The lady whose initiative this was, was cleaning the glass front and we stopped to chat. She said her and her husband had retired to the WC and they had seen the unused Post Box. They decided to transform the Post Box into a Street Library and made the physical changes. It is all for FREE. The idea is to take a book and to donate one if you can.”

If you grew up in South Africa, you’ll remember these bright red post boxes as part of everyday life. Once maintained by the South African Post Office, they’ve slowly faded from use as letters became emails and WhatsApps. Many now sit quietly on pavements, overlooked and forgotten.

Until, in this case, two retirees decided to give one a second purpose. Inside the box is a rotating mix of books and magazines, all carefully kept and easy to browse.

“The books and magazines are all in good condition and cover a broad spectrum ie children, adults, male and female.”

There’s something especially lovely about the idea. You arrive with one book and leave with another. You might discover a story you’d never normally choose. Or you might drop off a favourite read, knowing it could land in the hands of a stranger who needs that exact story right now.

“We thought this was such a good idea and imagined this being rolled out throughout the Western Cape. What a treat and a way to encourage reading.”

They didn’t manage to get the couple’s names, but wanted their gratitude shared far and wide.

“I don’t have the details of the couple that started this but a big and heartfelt shout out to them for caring so much for the community around them.”

Two people gave new meaning to a retired post box, believing that stories should be shared. It’s an open invitation to anybody who walks along prom (on Melkbaai Street) slow down and pick up something new to read, and leave a little piece of yourself behind in the form of a book you loved!
