(The Post News)Somalia is celebrating a ground-breaking achievement in global football after referee Omar Artan was selected to officiate at the FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Somali to reach this prestigious stage. He was selected amongst the 52 referees announced by FIFA set to officiate at the June-July finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

President Mohamud commended the effort, professionalism, and integrity shown by referee Omar. “He has become a symbol of inspiration for the new generation of Somalis,” said Mohamud for the international recognition.

Artan has been a refereeing in the Somali league until his recognition in 2018, when he got his FIFA license. The referee has been a ground breaker, officiated the 2025 African Football Confederation (CAF) and 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). For a person coming from a nation that has never qualified for FIFA World Cup, this is a big milestone.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated Artan on his historic appointment, describing it as a moment of immense national pride. The President highlighted that Artan’s achievement represents not only personal success but also a significant step forward for Somali representation in international sport.

Artan’s selection marks a major milestone for Somalia, a nation that has long been striving to rebuild and strengthen its sporting structures. His rise through the ranks of international refereeing reflects years of dedication, discipline, and excellence on the pitch.

The achievement is expected to inspire young athletes and officials across Somalia to pursue careers in football. With limited representation in global tournaments historically, Artan’s breakthrough signals new opportunities for Somali talent on the world stage.

Being chosen as a World Cup referee is one of the highest honours in football officiating. It places Artan among the elite referees trusted to oversee the sport’s biggest matches, further elevating Somalia’s presence in global football.

As the world prepares for the tournament, all eyes in Somalia will be on Omar Artan not just a referee, but a symbol of hope and progress for a nation passionate about the beautiful game.
