(The Post News)– Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is set to return to the East London Magistrate’s Court for a pre-sentencing hearing in his firearm case this week.
The Post News previously reported that Malema was convicted for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging it in public, reckless endangerment, and failing to take precautions.
The Malema firearm case will see the court hear arguments before sentencing proceedings begin. The EFF leader was found guilty of contravening firearm laws after discharging a weapon during a party event at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, in 2018.
Malema Unfazed by Court Case
Speaking to eNCA, Malema said he remains confident as the firearm case heads for sentencing. He said he believes that justice will prevail. “So if anything goes wrong, there is still a recourse. It is still going to be a long way to go. It is not something that should give people palpitations. It is a due process,” said Malema.
The EFF leader added that regardless of the outcome of the Malema sentencing, he plans to appeal. “So it does not matter whether the sentence is custodial or not custodial. All of it will be appealed,” Malema said.
During a media briefing held yesterday, Malema said the state has already put in heads of argument. He said, “They are calling for direct imprisonment for 15 years. This demonstrates that someone is making every effort to imprison me.
“I have no problem with that. It is legal battles that will be fought. Here in South Africa, you do not use the court to fight political battles,” added Malema.
Authorities have announced road closures ahead of the Julius Malema court appearance in East London. Buffalo City Metro Municipality confirmed that several roads will be affected, including Buffalo and Fleet, Church and Buffalo, as well as Oxford and Commissioner.
Officials said traffic officers will be deployed to manage congestion during the Malema firearm case hearing. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes and proceed with caution.
EFF Supporters Gather for Malema
Meanwhile, EFF supporters gathered in large numbers in East London ahead of the Malema sentencing in the firearm case. The party held a night vigil at Jan Smuts Stadium, with supporters showing solidarity with their leader as the Julius Malema firearm case continues.
